1 – Dünya olarak içinde bulunduğumuz pandemi süreci hepimizi etkilemeye devam ediyor. Bu karantina sürecinde neler yaptınız? Zamanınızı nasıl geçirdiniz?
DEREK: Evet bu pandemi tamamen berbat. Bu zamanlarda kişisel emniyetimizin ve sağlığımızın en önemli şey olduğunu biliyorum, ama bu kaosun bitmesi ve konserlerin/turların devam etmesi için hazır olan tek metalci olmadığıma bahse girebilirim.
Şu anda konserler yok dolayısıyla sadece stüdyoda çalışmaktayız, yeni müzik üretmekteyiz, yazmaktayız. Bir araya geliyoruz, eski materyalleri gözden geçiriyoruz, sonra yeni şeyler üzerinde çalışıyoruz ve bunu haftada 3-4 kez yapıyoruz. Grup bu rutine Noel civarında başladı yani eğer programı buna benzer şekilde sürdürürsek kaydımız bu sene içinde çok rahat hazır olabilir.
Oturup yazmak için hiç bu kadar zamanımız olmamıştı, bu gerçekten garip aslında, faaliyette olmaya alışığız, konserlerde/turlarda çalmaya… sürekli olarak… Dünya, konserlerde çalmak için birçok şehriyle beraber büyük bir yer biliyorsun. Şu anda karantinadayız ve normalde yaptığımız şeyleri yapmaya iznimiz yok… konserler yok = stüdyo stüdyo stüdyo. Ürettiğimiz bu şey çılgınca. Sıradaki kaydımız GERÇEKTEN EFSANE olacak!!!
2) Suffocation’ın müthiş “Of The Dark Light” albümünün 2017 yılında yayınlanmasından sonra, hayranlar grubun yeni albümünü bir süredir beklemekteydi. Bu karantina sürecinin gruplara yeni şarkı için ilham verdiğini göz önünde bulundurursak, grubun yeni şarkı hakkında herhangi bir çalışması var mı?
DEREK: Haha sanırım bu röportaja başlamadan önce sorulara göz gezdirmeliydim… Neredeyse cevabın tamamını az önce birinci soruyu cevaplarken inceledik.
Ama evet, dürüst olmam gerekirse, çıktığımız bütün turlar albüm çıkarmamızı engelliyor. Senede 150 veya 200 konserde çaldığınız zaman bu durum her sene veya iki senede bir albüm çıkarmanızı zorlaştırıyor. Güzel bir materyal bestelemek için zamana ihtiyacın var ve sen bizim genelde olduğumuz sıklıkta yolda olduğun zaman, bu durum albümler arasındaki zamanı daha da uzun yapıyor. Covid sebebiyle şu an için eve tıkıldık kaldık… Yani bir yazma döngüsüne mecbur kaldık, ki bu iyi bir şey, genellikle devasa tur döngülerine adanmış durumdayızdır. Evde olmak bizim için kötü bir şey değil, gayet güzel bir şekilde çalıyoruz ve yazdığımız şarkılar dehşet!
3) Bize müzikten ve yazma sürecinden bahseder misin?
DEREK: Yeni şeyler çılgın adamım. Hızlı ve agresif ... şüphesiz, çarpmalar, kancalar, armoniler ve grooves var. Tüm unsurlar orada, dediğim gibi, grup çok iyi çalıyor, bu yüzden bu yeni müzik gerçekten efsane! çalması eğlenceli, prodüksiyon öncesi kayıtları dinlemek eğlenceli, tüm albümün yazılması için sabırsızlanıyorum ve hepimiz gerçekten her şeye kilitli kalacağız!
Yine de yazma şeklimiz tuhaf, ya birisi bir şarkının tamamını bir araya getirecek ya da birisi bir bölüm sunacak ve sonra başka biri ona eklemek için zaten benzer bir şey yazacak ya da birisi orijinal olarak sunulan bölüme eşlik edecek bir şeyler yazacaktır. Bu ilginç bir süreç, ancak her ne kadar aşağı gidiyorsa işe yarıyor, ortaya çıkardığımız şeyler harika !!!
4) Gruba 2004'te katıldın ve Suffocation'ın bir parçası olmak senin için nasıl bir duygu?
DEREK: Ah adamım, SUFFO her zaman benim için en iyisiydi, makinenin bir parçası olmak gerçek dışı geliyor! Bu adamlarla 20 yılı devirmek, biliyorsun, herkes gerçekten harika, eğlenmek için çılgın şeyler çalıyoruz, bu harika ve bunu seviyorum!
5) Aynı sahneyi birçok grupla paylaştığınız turlar oldu. Senin için en sevdiğin canlı performans hangisiydi?
DEREK: Adamım bu gerçekten zor ... Sahneyi kesinlikle hepsiyle paylaşıyoruz. Dışarıda o kadar çok efsane grup var ki, bir favori seçmek zor. Acımasız death metal gruplarını görmekten gerçekten zevk alıyorum!!! Genellikle 3 ila 5 hasta müzisyen enstrümanlarını parçalara ayırır, GOOD SHIT! Ama bir favori seçmek kesinlikle zor, yıllar boyunca pek çok müthiş grupla çaldık!
6) Son olarak, hayranlarınıza ve Türk hayranlarınıza söyleyeceğiniz bir şey var mı?
DEREK: Evet dostum, herkese teşekkür etmek istiyorum! Oraya geri dönüp hepiniz için parçalamak için sabırsızlanıyoruz! Sizin için çalmayı kesinlikle seviyoruz! Yakında görüşmek dileğiyle!
ENGLISH FOR INTERVIEW
1) This pandemic process we are in as the world continues to affect all of us. So what did you do during this quarantine period? How did you spend your time?
DEREK- yeah this pandemic is completely fucked. I know our personal safety and well-being is what’s most important in these times, but I can bet I’m not the only metal head that is ready for this chaos to be over and shows / tours to resume!!!
Currently there are no show so we’ve just been working in the studio, writing and producing new music. We get together, run through old material, then work on new material, and we do that 3 to 4 times a week. The band started this routine around Christmas time so if we keep to a schedule similar to this, the record may very well be ready this year.
We’ve never had this much time to sit around and write, it’s really weird actually, we’re use to being on the go, playing shows/touring... like constantly.... The worlds a big place ya know, with many cities to play. Now we’re in lock down, and not allowed to do what we do.... no shows = studio studio studio. The shit we’re cranking out is crazy. Our next record is gonna be REALLY SICK!!!
2) After Suffocation's great album "Of The Dark Light" released in 2017, fans have been waiting for new album from the band for a while. Seeing that this quarantine process inspires the bands for new music, does the band have any work on new music?
DEREK- haha I guess I should have looked the questions over before starting this interview.... pretty much just went over a lot of this answering the 1st question.
But yeah, honestly, all the touring we do does interfere with putting out albums. When your playing 150 or 200 shows a year makes it hard to crank out a record every year / every other year. You need time to compose good material and when you’re on the road as much as we usually are, it makes the time between albums longer.
We’re stuck home for now due to Covid...
So we’re forced into a writing cycle, which is good, usually we’re committed to massive touring cycles. Being home is not a bad thing for us, we’re playing really well and the new songs we’re writing are brutal!
3) If there is new music, can you tell us something about the music and the writing process?
DEREK- The new stuffs crazy man. It’s fast and aggressive.... no doubt, but there’s also slams, and hooks, and harmonies, and grooves... all the elements are there, like I was sayin, the band is playing super good, so this new music is fucked up! Really sick, fun to play, fun to listen to the pre-production recordings, can’t wait to have the whole record written and all of us really be locked in to it all!
It’s weird how we write though, either someone’ll put together an entire song, or someone will present a part and then someone else will have something similar already written to add to it, OR someone will write something to accompany the part that was originally presented. It’s an interesting process, but however it’s goin’ down, it’s working, the stuff we’re comin’ up with is cool!!!
4) You joined the band in 2004 and how does it feel to be a part of Suffocation for you?
DEREK- Aw man, SUFFO was always the sickest to me, being part of the machine feels unreal! Just shy of 20 years killin the game with these guys! Ya know, everybody’s really awesome, we play crazy shit for fun, it’s super sick!!!! I love it!
5) There have been tours where you shared the same scene with many bands. What was your favorite live performance for you?
DEREK- Man that’s really hard... we definitely share the stage with all of ‘em. So many sick bands out there, it’s hard to pick a favorite. I really just enjoy seein’ brutal death metal bands that are killin’ it!!! Usually 3 to 5 sick musicians rippin’ up their instruments, GOOD SHIT! But definitely hard to pick a favorite, played with so many sick bands over the years!
6) Finally, do you have anything to say to your fans and Turkish fans?
DEREK- Yeah man, I’d like to say thank you to everyone! We can’t wait to get back out there and rip it up for you all! We absolutely love playing for you guys!! Hope to see you all soon!
